Abstract

The Cuban Greater Funnel-Eared Bat (Natalus primus) is an endangered bat species; currently only one population is known in a cave in the National Park “Península de Guanahacabibes”. This paper provides the results of the estimation of the number of individuals in the population based on capture-mark and recapture methods. The study was conducted between January and February 2019 in Cueva La Barca. Individuals were captured inside the refuge and were marked with colored nail varnish, which allowed for individual identification. Data were analyzed using methods that assume closed populations: Schnabel's method for multiple samples and three Huggins models. The results indicate that the population size of N. primus is between 320 and 340 individuals. Although the values obtained in the present study, compared with previous estimates, could suggest a reduction in the population, its major contribution is a replicable baseline to evaluate the size of this population in the future on which to base evaluations of the threat status and establish conservation actions.
