Abstract

Most of Cuban biodiversity is concentrated in the eastern region of the island, being butterflies one of the evident examples. Although the diversity of these insects has been well-studied in the mountains comprised in this region, several areas remain unexplored. In this work we list the butterfly fauna of Loma de Mícara, Segundo Frente, Santiago de Cuba. Samplings were conducted in August 2023 and July 2024, in humid serpentine scrub-woodland (charrascal) and broadleaf semideciduous forest habitats. Ninety-eight species belonging to five families were detected, as well as 35 endemic taxa. The high butterfly richness in this region could be related to the habitat mosaic of the locality and its biogeographical placement in Sierra Cristal. Implications of some of the observed species are discussed
